Double chance explained: when 1X beats a straight win: markets article cover

A double chance bet wins if either of two results happens. There are three versions:

  • 1X: the home team wins or the match is drawn
  • X2: the away team wins or the match is drawn
  • 12: either team wins (anything but a draw)

Why it wins more often

Because you cover two results instead of one, your chance of winning goes up. If our model gives the home side 50% and the draw 26%, a 1X bet has a 76% chance. The price you pay is lower odds.

When double chance makes sense

  • When the favourite is only a slight favourite and a draw is a real possibility
  • When you are building a slip and want each leg to be as safe as possible
  • Away from home, where strong teams drop points more often

When it does not

If a team is already at 75% or more to win outright, adding the draw rarely improves the bet enough to justify the shorter price. A straight win is usually the cleaner pick.

How we use it

Our headline tip switches to double chance when no single result reaches 55%. You can see every double chance pick of the day on the double chance page.
